Workin’ Out With The Girls

Every Wednesday we are trying to get together and meet to do our ‘speed’ work. Last week was so fun! We had 6 mom’s show up with a total of 14 kids between us all. We split into groups and switched off who was watching the kids and who was running. Running with a group always makes things so much more fun!  During this time some of the kids were laughing, some were screaming, most had mud on their faces, and one was eating a popsicle that she got from who knows where!  Usually, I’m a big fan of early morning runs but you can’t beat a little extra sleep and a day at the park with the kids.

This week, I also got in some great cross training with my dad. He’s a big road biker. So I clipped into my pedals and hit the road with him. There is truly nothing more maddening then getting it handed to you by your 65 year old dad. No matter how hard I train, that guy is impossible to beat! I’m attributing it to, “old man strength”. Somehow, somewhere, that guy has an inner strength that screams in a Darth Vader voice, “Stacie, I am your FATHER, and you will never be faster than me.” So annoying.  However, after almost losing him to cancer a year ago I will take a beating from a healthy dad over one that is sick any day!

 On Tuesday, I decided to take my kiddos along for a  bike ride/run. In which my four year old in all her sweetness said to me, “Mom, let’s ask Dad to buy you a new stroller that one goes too slow.” Agh, if only it was the strollers fault… By the way, I run with THIS stroller if you’re looking for a good one, here is my recommendation (although I wish it was a tad lighter and I’d get the swivel front wheel model).

Later int he week I took the kids on a hike. We went to my favorite  mountain trail that leads to a river. When we got to the river we found hundreds of butterfly’s. It was really amazing. But the real story is when we were walking back on the trail and a rattlesnake crossed our path! I calmly said, “OOOPS, there is a  cute little rattlesnake! Let’s just walk backwards everyone and let him go about his business.” But inside I was like, “EEEEKKKK,  a rattlesnake! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!”  It was pretty freaky. I’ve ran that same trail my whole life and never seen one, then I see it while I have my 3 kids under 4 years old with me! Crazy.  Anyhow, hope your week is filled with adventures and if it’s not, go create your own!

    Do you recommend weight training while training for a marathon? Thanks and I enjoy reading the posts!

      Yes Leslie I do. Weight training can be a great way to avoid injury. Strengthening supporting muscles helps take the strain off the ones that are enduring the direct pounding. My reps usually consist of higher reps with less weight. Good luck and thanks for reading!
